Bill French Business Intelligence Dashboards on the Cheap

During the last five years or so, I've become a data nut. I've learned to love business metrics because without measures of performance, you never really know if you're heading in the right direction.

My business advisors frequently ask me if my actions were moving "the needle" in the right direction. I didn't have a "needle" and typical business intelligence solutions are completely unaffordable for small companies. That's when I realized, I not only needed a performance "needle",…

Bob Berwyn CDOT focusing on high-tech, high speed rail in new I-70 plan

CDOT has released the latest version of an I-70 improvement plan and will take public comment through Nov. 8. The draft programmatic environmental impact statement (say that fast three times) includes a preferred alternative that was developed by consensus among I-70 corridor stakeholders, including local towns and businesses.

That consensus is for a 'multi-modal' solution, with an equal emphasis on high speed transit via an advanced guideway system, and highway… Continue

Bob Berwyn Solar power debate - central or distributed generation?

We all know that moving to solar power is the right thing to do, but exactly how we get there is up for debate. There seems to be a growing movement to focus on distributed solar power generation, as opposed to large centralized facilities. Advocates for distributed solar power say the best course is to use develop solar resources within already developed footprints, rather than building huge new plants in undeveloped areas. Bill French Two Really (CRITICAL) SEO Tips for Small Businesses

I see these issues all the time and they're key and critical to improving findability on the web for your small business website/blog.

For giggles, I used Judi's site as a good example because both of these key issues need to be corrected. Sorry Judi - I needed a good example where both problems were easy to see and your WebsiteGrader report…

Bill French Color Me Socially Skeptical...

I'm pretty certain the whole social networking craze and assumption that customers want to get chummy with businesses and develop a quasi-personal relationship, is an incomplete version of reality.

What customers want is "self-service options" that make it unnecessary to have lengthy conversations. This is not to suggest that businesses should not produce and distribute social content - to the contrary, social media is a form of self-service monologue (not necessarily dialog) that… Continue

Joy Woodworth Why do auto insurance premiums change?

Auto insurance premiums change for the same reasons that the price of other goods and services you buy change.

Insurance companies incur the same costs you do in buying goods and servcies, and these costs can ultimately affect your insurance premium. Costs affecting the ultimate price of auto insurance include:

  • Medical costs to treat injuries
  • Auto repair costs
  • Costs to adjust claims
  • Inflation
  • Uninsured drivers (your policy…

Judi LaPoint Word of Mouth Marketing For Small Business Professionals!

I recently read a great book by Andy Sernovitz called Word of

Mouth Marketing – How Smart Companies Get People Talking
– and here I

am talking about him – so I guess it must work!

We all know that mass marketing is fast becoming a thing of the past. Sure, you can still get your yellow pages ad, and maybe an ad in the paper, or my “personal favorite”, your ‘brochuuuuuure’…but all this

really is, is static advertising.

It just sits…

Bob Berwyn Powder and politics in Colorado

All the major gubernatorial candidates are scheduled to speak at the annual Colorado Ski Country USA confab coming up in Denver June 9 and 10. They may be looking for ski industry support and political donations, but our main question would be whether the ski or snowboard, and which one of them tallied the most days on snow this season. Judi LaPoint Having a Website Is Not the Same As Having An Online Marketing Strategy!

There are some “must have” criteria for your website to be considered to be a strong marketing tool. Take a critical look at your website right not to see if you have these elements in place. You’ll want a specific online marketing strategy that:

  • lays the ground work for gathering information about your customers and prospects,
  • plans the best way to segment your market,
  • creates a communication strategy on a regular…

Bob Berwyn Warmer than ever ...

Federal climate agencies recently announced that last month was the hottest April ever for the globe, averaging land, sea and atmospheric temperatures. The January - April period was also the warmest on record, and climate scientists are nearly certain 2010 will end up as the warmest year on record. The data tends to shoot down the idea that maybe, just maybe, sunspots are to blame for global warming rather than greenhouse gas emissions. Global temps are spiking even though solar activity is at… Continue

Bob Berwyn Confusion over county's new energy loan program

A lender guideline letter from Fannie Mae has cast some confusion over Summit County's recently announced energy loan program. Fannie Mae says they won't accept notes with senior liens attached, which could — depending on interpretation — include the county's loans, since they are repaid through a special property tax assessment. But energy program advocates say the program financing is not a "loan" per se, but should be considered the equivalent of other improvement assessments. Read more at… Continue

Bob Berwyn Economic 'monsoon' for county budget?

SUMMIT COUNTY — County officials said property tax revenues could take a $4.6 million hit in 2012, when the latest round of property valuations kick in for the purposes of assessing property taxes. According to early figures from the county assessor's office, property values, based sales during the past two years, have dropped 20 to 22 percent. The valuation period ends June 30.
